Terrific idea to follow up after 6 months or so to see how the new hire is working out!
Hearing your sister's story points out that all methods of job search are worth it. You just never know where your next job might come from...sort of like playing the lottery!
Glad to hear you think things are picking up! I agree, there are jobs out there. Staying active in search will pay off!
